Acrylics vs. watercolours II

Hallo everybody,

how has the past week been for you all?
Do you remember a while ago when I was thinking about acrylics and watercolours and which medium I prefer? Back then I was attracted by the advantages of both mediums and used them both, but meanwhile I think I made my decision.

It is – what a surprise – watercolours!
Who would have thought that, right? 🙂

For a while now I have been exclusively painting with watercolours except from one painting I started lately – and I don’t know if I will finish it -, the orchids in winter.
After so many months using transparent watercolours the use of acrylics felt heavy and too pasty and I really didn’t feel happy about using them at all.

So I thought about my preceded post about the same subject – https://theademilos.de/?p=315 – and concluded that I had changed my mind.

Here are my reasons why:
1. Watercolours are more ecological.
They are plastic free and if the colour dries out you just have to put some water again to revive the colour.
2. Watercolours can be used in an opaque as well as in an transparent/translucent way, so they can seem matt and “heavy” or shiny and light.
3. Watercolours combine simplicity and difficulty.
The simple thing about them is to get a lighter shade by just adding more water or changing the colour by a little bit of another colour. The difficult part about them is that you have to know how the colours will react, how much water is enough, how long it takes for them to dry and many more.
And finally 4. watercolours are challenging me – this is maybe the main reason about them being my number one medium to paint with currently.

What are your reasons to use watercolours? Or are there maybe reasons you really don’t want to use them at all? I would be glad to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Stay happy and creative!
Yours, Thea
